JAN ALBERS
Ever since Jan Albers—taken quite literally—appeared upon the pictorial surface, he has struck a self-confident note which clearly indicates that he does not intend to content himself with being carried along by the powerful current of what has already been thought and done. And he achieves this intention in the medium of painting and the picture, upon a terrain which, because of the battles that have raged upon it over the centuries, bristles with an exceptional number of mines. But Jan Albers seems to view this situation, not as an obstacle, but in fact as a stimulation. His works strive for an encounter with what is already present in order to create through friction that heat which allows him to free himself from the oppressive burden of the grand art-historical tradition without at the same time ignoring it. The friction is, as it were, the fuel for the self-ignition which propels the oeuvre of this artist.
