The Return of Techné
Seoul Art Space_ Geumcheon

This exhibition displays 11 technology-based creative and novel works selected by “The Da Vinci Idea Public Contribution,” which was convened last July at Seoul Art Space_ Geumcheon. These developed works are made with artistic imagination and aesthetic aspects by creatively applying scientific technology, and have been created for the possibility of industrialization. In this sense, these works do not lean towards a pure boundary of contemporary art. However, we ensure that this exhibit is full of novel and talented experiments and trials including the possibility of the fusion of arts and science; sensitivity derived from the boundaries of scientific technology intervenes into our lives and change our lifestyle and in accordance with the development of media, it changes the visualization method for artistic sensitivity.
The transition into an integrative paradigm- knowledge convergence of art, technology, science, humanities, fusion of genres, consilience, multi-disciplinary affair and trans-disciplinary culture indicates that we are reaching the turning point of recovering the origin of 'Techné'. Also, through the concept of 'Techné', you can trace the underlying essence of very close relationship between technology and art, and encounter science and art that have undergone a change in environment of these days.
The word 'Technology' originates through this following process: the ancient Greek word 'Techné' was called 'Ars' by Romans. As soon as this word reached the rest of Europe, it was called 'Art'. Going through such linguistic variation, from the standpoint of etymology, this word has diverged into a word with the meaning of technique as the origin of 'Technology.' However, the original concept of 'Techné' was not clearly distinguished from arts and craftsmanship or other well-trained skills which have the need in various fields. The nature of 'Techné,' which is interpreted to be understood in a broad sense, has taken root in the idea that comprehensive perception based on a certain level of knowledge constitutes the ability to enable actual application.
The relationship between technology and art, by means of new media, and in accordance with scientific technological development is gradually narrowing the gaps that result from modern conflicts and newly visualized by contemporary point of views. New technologies that were initially developed for special purposes such as military defense and industries, including the computer and virtual reality, augmented reality, wireless networks and so on. Those things have deeply intruded into our daily life and have great impact on both the material and spiritual point of view. For a long time, we have seen artistic practices that supported by New Technologies such as a new media art. Meanwhile, artists have experimented by applying scientific technology to art and have inspired the fields of scientific technology and relevant industries into new developments. Of course, not all new technologies or innovative ideas are accepted by their times and become universal. Instead, these technologies and ideas can forecast and offer clues for the future.
Lately, the media arts have been unfortunately buried under the formality of media experiment ending up in a stalemate. Various experiments displayed at ‛Da Vinci Creative Idea’ does not imply that there is a need for broad discussion to make the public better understand the concept of media and its nature from the introspective points of view on the recent media arts. Simply, their new artistic trials made by utilizing technology and new media offer ideas and prospects that regard to the following questions; what change will their new artistic trials by utilizing technology and a new media bring to our lives? in what trends will these trials develop in the future? what should the relations between human and media with technology fused into art be referred to? in what fields or how will new trials that artists and engineers have demonstrated to us be applied?
