Community Arts Project

The ‘community arts’ that is defined by Seoul Art Space GEUMCHEON is ‘an activity that carries more meaning than individual artistic accomplishments, an activity that contributes to the underlying culture of the community, and an activity (archiving, activity based on local area, etc.) that definitely doesn’t set residents and collaboration as a prerequisite,” and these activities has been implemented through a total of 12 projects that started from 2009 to the second half of 2011.

2009, the first year of the project, was when the activity of artists directly experiencing the basic methods in education of artistic creation and issues of community were attempted. In the case of 2010, there was focus on the role of a ‘reporter’ by making social issues known to others, and also the focus was on establishment of cultural information. By the second half of 2010, the public participation programs become relatively low as the aesthetic degree of completion becomes reinforced, and now in 2011, the programs are being carried out with the focus on finding meaning in communality and aesthetic significance of daily activities and living spaces.
