Verena Issel
MSK Strømsnes, 2015

The artistic work of Verena Issel (b. 1982 in Munich, lives in Hamburg) is unusually diverse and precise.
This precision is rather not presented in a slightly argumentative way but with playful lightness and in colourful and formal opulence.
The thinking of Verena Issel is determined by a deep curiosity, which confronts Issel consistently with the unknown and discovers new areas.
You can see this easily in her biography, for example in the parallel studies of the at first sight antagonistic subjects Fine Arts and Classical Philology (Latin/Ancient Greek) ((and both with a degree)) or in longer periods studying and working in places like Lisbon, Hangzhou or recently Papua-Neuguinea.
This curiousity finds an artistic echo in her way of dealing with different forms - she does not only articulate herself in overboarding performances and Installations of varying sizes, or intimate drawings, colourful-quirky objects, videos and sculptures, but also conceptual work with humour: she published a calendar called "Art boy 2010" where she photographed twelve nude male art students.
This Pin-up-Calendar is full references towards art history.
Also she co-publishes the fanzine CALL, which focuses on feminist questions. CALL organises exhibitions, lectures, talks and publishes the magazine CALL.
The joy of unknown, new and manfold issues is manifestated especially in Issel own artistic theme, the transformation and reevaluation of every-day-materials, which she is studding in an associative way without becoming pathetic.
The objects' origin remains visible, but at the same time they develop a life of its own, which is independent from common definitions such as function, triviality or any form of precodification.
Verena Issel herself calls this process for "abstraction" vs. "empathy".
Characteristics such as material, surface, form, structure, colour and composition of objects and materials which are determined by their every-day-use are being questioned and put together in new constellations.
Constellations, which are flexible within themselves and which can be realised in a smaller or bigger scale, all depending on the different architectural environments.
Constellations which not necessarily have to be seen as single pieces, but which rely on each other, which interlock which each other and which enhance and augment each other.
There is a fine line between criticism and humour in Verena Issels work.
Her artistic strategy is based on a structural openness and the equality of form and content.
Whether it be the humorous and critical conversion of a sex-sells-policy into the ARTBOY-calendar (mentioned above) or the until now existing social reality of a male-dominated art world in "WOMENS CAREER", whether it be the metaphorical installation "A 1000s bowls stupidity" which is marked by blind alleys or the adaption of literature in TRISTES TROPIQUES by using the waste of our society full of consumption, Verena Issels interest in everyday life and it's structures, sequences and materials is part of her manfold investigation of fundamental systems of our society - the structures which form the organisations and realities of our society.
