Society as an Object of a Endless Thinking
Shin Seung Oh
(Director of the Perigee Gallery)
Kira Kim pays attention to the stories about individuals who are living in various structures existing in the modern society. The fixated information which dominated the modern society provides us only with the headline and the core part. And more detailed information is selected, excluded and accentuated by the news providers and invisible to us. Rather, those ways prohibit us from knowing the real events exactly, and what is worse, make those irrelevant to us. For him, the artist and art has a responsibility for maintaining this tension placed between art and reality in this modern society. Therefore, the artist records this and reproduces it into a work in his own way. The objects which he chooses are the individuals who have their own stories hidden by various ideologies, such as the people who lead the labor movement, the separated families and the suppressed artists by the military dictatorships, the poet who does something normal every day. Although all these people can't be tied up under a absolute standard, the reason that the artist selects these people and reflects on his works is that he wants to show the individual's stories which are controlled and excluded by various ideologies and norms maintaining the societal structures with the artist's eyes.
For the purpose, he attempts various ways, such as drawing, sculpture, video, performance and in recent days even psychotherapy, production of a hip-hop album and show. I think that his working ways are proper for capturing our lives in the antagonistic relationship which strengthened through various ideologies made by the universal ideas in Korea. Our society that appears in Kim's works is a place where the individuals are suppressed by the plethora of ideology. This is the message which he obviously wants to show us through the camera angles. Nevertheless, his works are not only for giving the visual stimulus to us. Furthermore, the artist asks about the artist's fundamental identity by asking himself, 'What can the artist do with the work?' in a uncertain and floating society through these workings and hopes to ask the contemporary audience at the same time. This doesn't have the aim for raising awareness about a matter. Because thought and awareness is clearly different. In the case of awareness, if we have a clear aim, we can accomplish and obtain it. Then, the process of awareness is completed. But, because there is not a aim in thought, its process has to last.
After all, what Kira Kim presents through his works is that we not only perceive a certain situation, but we are aware of our surroundings by continuing to think independently. In the pursuit of this purpose, the artist wants to set up solid groundwork for the audience to think for themselves through his works. Therefore, he emphasizes that we have to think about the present environments around us and these are also our stories which we have to look right through various works connoting both the meticulous eyes toward the individuals and the macroscopic viewpoint about the surroundings around them.
