The Placeness and Shin Ji Sun, The Artist and its Theme.
Ko Dong Yeon(art history)

The artist, Shin Ji Sun shows the well-organized works which have the sophisticated technology in the exihibitions. Her works started from the works relating to the placeness, but evolved gradually to the architectural modes, mixture of the different architectural modes, the development of cities, and the visual symbol representing the place where exists in each city. In the recent exhibition held in Geumcheon Art Space, She showed how historical legitimacy in the certain is being developed into a interesting event by the local governments and the local peoples who hope to recover the region's tradition.
In the image made by Shin, the local people got together and progressed the events. After they postulate a certain tree similarly as the seonangdang[shrine to the village deity] which placed traditionally in the entrance to a village and worshiped by the local peoples, they used to bow to the tree. The middle aged men beautifully dressed in Hanbok appeared and head of a village, neighborhood officials who exists in the modern time as a substitute for the pre-modern society's village elders' role. And around the place, the local peoples get together promoting the personal prosperity and friendship through the regional prosperity. On the one hand, these events seem like very common community which is autonomously formed. Naturally, although we can't presume that these groups got together totally only in a innocent gesture, in the aspect that they are not motivated by the big political, economical benefits, those reminds us of the traditional voluntary community. Nevertheless, the various kinds of elements which are used in the events seem like the imitation as the most organizations in the city, and furthermore the environments where they made. The music which they played during all the event is various teuroteus and we are not sure whether the tale around region which they presume, is real or not, that is, misinformed and exaggerated.
In a similar vein, various architectural modes appear in her paintings. On the one hand, because these architectural modes are mostly separated from the background which are painted in a very realistic way, these appeared to be went through research, but on the other hand, these architectural modes seem to be the architectural modes like a missing child separated from the context or refusing the contextualization.
In proportion to the beauty of each motive, the audiences pay attention only to the detailed architectural modes which seem to come nearly from games or cartoons, but they can't easily fulfill their 'desire for ascertaining the historical truths' which arouses when we see the typical paintings which describe the architectural modes. What is more, because the background is covered with too extravagant colours, these reminds us not of the building standing in the actual time-space, but of the sorts of the stereotyping buildings completely separated from the actual environments.
While Shin pays attention to the placeness which she herself explores very systematically, various kinds of human activities and the architectural modes as the important visual media indicating a certain placeness, I as a critic wonder about the relation between the placeness and Shin. The curiosity about this can be said into two kinds. First, what is the relation between Shin and the community within the placeness? Does she want to become intimate with it, and talk about the right placeness? What is her opinion on these questions as a observer?
Or, from a different angle, I wonder about her own placeness. Thanks to the unique voyeurism which the artist has, she can provide us with a sense[feeling] of distance and keen observations. But, because of the very sense[feeling] of distance, the distance between the artist herself and the subject which the artist deals with is developed too far. This is similar to the phenomena which come from when the scientist looks the physical phenomona consistently with the outsider's view. In this regard, the doctor who doesn't really suffer from a disease often gives advice to the patient who knows too well the disease and suffers from it.
I think these are the questions that I want to ask the artist when we meet. Why is she interested in her own placeness or the existence and placeness of the others?
